The Shakers, a religious community recognized for their distinctive designs in furniture and high quality of craftsmanship, started weaving rag rugs in the 1840’s. Their attractive patterns were the result of twisting finely cut rags or yarns in either an S or Z twist direction. During this workshop each student will weave a Shaker Rag Runner on a pre-warped loom. You will learn how to prepare the rags and yarns, putting twist in the materials while at the loom. Demos will also be done to give you ideas on how to finish your runner with the distinctive shaker braided selvage edging using either a four, five or seven strand braid.
